Georgian London - A guided walk around St James's
Starting at 2pm on Saturday 23rd September
Elaine Wein will lead us through the histories and mysteries of this fascinating part of London

IBM Club Member's* Price £5 per person
Non-Member Price £10 per person

Long associated with the aristocracy and the wealthy, we will explore the fashionable area of St James's and learn about Georgian London. Sometimes called the Age of Elegance, the fabulous frocks, fans, feathers and finery soothe us with images of a gentler, well-mannered time when perfumed gentlewomen were wooed by gentlemen in cravats and breeches across ballrooms and well-manicured lawns. But don’t be deceived!

On our walk will discover why hairstyles forced ladies to sit on the floors of their coaches and why you needed mouse hair as part of your make-up routine.  We will see where our Georgian Gentlemen and Ladies went to buy the latest fashions and where Jane Austen was very extravagant. We will hear about the many exclusive Gentleman’s Clubs and the tales behind these institutions with their outrageous gambling, the first woman programmer, Beau Brummell and see the smallest square in London. Finally, we will hear about our four Georgian Queens, walk through St. James Park and learn about Princess Diana’s ancestors, and how fireworks were very dangerous in Georgian London.

A circular walk from Green Park Tube Station  - Starting at 2pm

(please check your travel arrangements and aim to arrive in time to start the walk promptly at 2pm)

Meeting point: Green Park exit from Green Park tube on the south side of Piccadilly.  This exits leads you into the park itself and we will meet by the Diana Fountain.
